Increased service on Go Transit Lakeshore line begins Saturday

A beefed-up GO Transit schedule along the Lakeshore lines will begin Saturday, with trains running every 30 minutes, every day, between Aldershot and Oshawa.

Currently, trains along the Lakeshore line run hourly during off-peak times. That will change to every half hour for off-peak times and weekends, adding more than 260 new train trips every week, GO said.

“We’re not extending the actual hours, but what we’re doing is filling in the gaps in between,” Go Transit president Gary McNeil said Friday.

“We’re anticipating about 6,000 more riders in the off-peak riders on Lakeshore East and another 6,000 on Lakeshore West. We’re hoping for about a 50 per cent increase in our off-peak ridership.”

During peak commuting times, trains will run roughly every 10 to 15 minutes.

The announcement to launch the more-frequent service was originally made in April. According to a report at that time in the Toronto Star, the increase will boost GO’s annual operating costs by $7.7 million, however it is expected to offset by a significant increase in ridership.

More than 100,000 riders take the GO train along the Lakeshore lines each weekday. A total of 65 million riders use GO Transit each year, it said.
