Ontario legislature to break until October

Queen’s Park members have agreed to pass a motion to adjourn the Ontario legislature until Oct. 20.

Meanwhile, Ontario’s governing Liberals have passed their budget bill, which will see the province spend an estimated $12.5 billion more than it takes in.

The final vote on the budget bill passed in the legislature 56 to 37.

It’s the same budget that triggered the June 12 election, but when the Liberals came back with a majority, it was almost certain to get through.

It includes tens of billions for transit projects over the next decade, billions more for corporate grants and a made-in-Ontario pension plan.

The Progressive Conservatives are warning that the budget will lead to a downgrade from debt-rating agencies, which would increase the amount of money Ontario pays to service the debt.

The New Democrats say the budget makes a lot of shiny promises, but it’s concealing a plan to sell off provincial assets and cut public sector jobs as the Liberals try to balance the books.
