Israel strikes house of Hamas Gaza leader, digs in for long fight

Explosions again light up the sky in Gaza despite a plea for peace from the UN.

For more than three weeks, Israel’s military has been pounding Palestinian buildings in response to rocket attacks by Hamas militants.

The now familiar sound of Israeli artillery and tank shelling fills the air.

But these overnight attacks were the most widespread throughout the offensive.

Here, clouds of smoke fan the horizon, as an Israeli strike targets Hamas broadcast outlets, Al-Aqsa TV and Al-Aqsa Radio.

Civilians fled the gutted building.

Inside, the television station continued to broadcast, but the radio station went silent.

Earlier an Israeli aircraft fired a missile at the home of the Hamas leader in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh. There were no reports of casualties there but 11 people were killed in another strike on a house in the Bureij refugee camp in Gaza City.

More than one thousand Palestinians and dozens of Israeli soldiers have been killed in the fighting.

The international community has been unable to halt the long conflict and the number of casualties is only expected to rise.
