Council bans right turns on red lights at Leaside intersection after girl’s death

Toronto council has approved a motion to ban right turns on red signals at a Leaside intersection after a girl was struck and killed there by a minivan last month.

Georgia Walsh, the daughter of John Walsh, the head of the Conservative Party of Canada, suffered severe head trauma and was rushed to SickKids where she later died after being hit by a minivan that was trying to make a right-hand turn onto Millwood Road from McRae Drive.

The 50-year-old driver was later charged under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act with failing to stop at a red light and careless driving.

For months, residents had called for city council to do something about the increased traffic volumes in that area.

The ban, which was proposed by Coun. John Parker, would be in effect at all times.
