Apple to release new 12.9-inch iPad in 2015: report

Apple is preparing to manufacture a 12.9-inch screen iPad, the company’s largest ever, according to reports.

Production is reportedly scheduled to commence by the first quarter of 2015.

The original iPad has a screen size of 9.7 inches, and Apple is also re-working the mini at a 7.9-inch screen size.

CEO Tim Cook is working to shake up the iPad line, with sales of the tablets down for two straight quarters, amid a lack of new models and as consumers gravitate to smartphones with bigger screens.

Meanwhile, reports also say the much-anticipated iPhone 6 will be unveiled on Sept. 9.

Although details of the new iPhone haven’t been made public, some of the new features reportedly include a larger screen size, the position of the volume buttons, the new location of the power button, and a 128 GB model.

Apple’s strategy will go against other competitors, since the largest growth for tablets has been in the smaller screen size segment, led by Google’s Android mobile operating system.

According to technology researcher Gartner Inc., the Android became the top tablet operating system last year, with 62 per cent of the market.

iPads that use Apple’s iOS mobile software had a 36 per cent market share at the end of 2013, down from 53 per cent a year earlier, according to Gartner.
