OPP deploys unmarked cars to nab distracted drivers

The OPP has dedicated 10 more vehicles — all unmarked — to catching distracted drivers during its long weekend safety blitz.

“Our officers remain deeply concerned with the number of drivers they see driving distracted, especially those who talk on cellphones or even worse — texting, which is one of the most dangerous activities to engage in while driving,” said Chief Supt. Chuck Cox.

“Regardless of how safe a driver, passenger or pedestrian you may be, you should be equally concerned about the number of motorists who risk your life by not paying full attention to safely sharing the road with you.”

So far this year, 35 people have died because of distracted driving on roads the OPP patrols.

In 2013, there were more deaths due to a driver’s lack of attention (86) than to alcohol or speed.

Currently, fines for distracted driving range from $60 to $500. In October, those convicted could pay as much as $1,000 and get three demerit points.
