Police release security video in Scarborough pizza parlour double shooting

Toronto police say the man killed in a double shooting in a Scarborough pizza shop earlier this month was not targeted.

Abdul Monir, 31, was shot dead in a Scarborough pizza shop where he worked in the Markham and Lawrence area on Sept. 14.

It was earlier believed that he was targeted because of his ties to the U.S. military. He came to Canada from war-torn Afghanistan, where he worked with detainees captured by the American army during the war. He was considered a friend of American troops and was recognized for his effort in the fight for a free Afghanistan.

“We don’t have evidence that Monir was targeted,” Det. Sgt. Graham Gibson said on Tuesday.

The police released a security video on Tuesday, hoping to identify a potential witness and trigger potential witnesses’ memories.

The footage shows images of the suspect’s vehicle dropping off what the police say is the male suspect in the area.

“There’s footage that shows the suspect being picked up at a different location,” Gibson said.

Police say a potential witness, believed to be a female, was in the area of the time of the shooting and was in position to hear the gunshots.

After speaking to other witnesses, police say she may have been wearing a form of a headscarf and possibly lives in the area.

Gibson said the police have security video that was shot inside the parlour but he would not discuss what’s in that video.

Police said that evidence leads them to believe that the shop was targeted in a robbery. Gibson wouldn’t say if the shooting was a result of a botched robbery.

The owner of the shop, which remains closed, was also wounded in the shooting. He survived but is still in critical condition, so police haven’t been able to speak to him yet.

Judging from the video, police believe there was one shooter but do not have an exact description.

Monir arrived in Canada last spring and had only worked at the shop for two weeks. He had hoped to be able to bring his family, including two young children, here soon. Monir was the city’s 35th homicide.
