Honda Indy to roar into Toronto in June, instead of July

The Honda Indy is set to take over Toronto in June next year, instead of its regular July dates.

The 28th annual event at Exhibition Place will be held June 12-14, officials announced on Thursday.

Organizers worked with officials at the City of Toronto, the venue and Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games to work around the dates of both events.

The Pan Am Games will be held July 10-26, while the Parapan American Games are Aug 7-15.

“Scheduling an event of this magnitude is complicated in a normal year,” Charlie Johnstone, president of Honda Indy Toronto, said in a release.

Extensive road closures are expected during Pan Am Games, which is expected to snarl traffic in the city. Also, during the Indy, a portion of Lake Shore Boulevard at Strachan Road is scheduled to be closed.

“There are a lot of details and coordination that go into the teams, the schedules, the races and the various sites, especially with street courses,” Johnstone said.

Honda Indy organizers said the Verizon IndyCar Series returns as the “marquee race” event, while other on-track events will be announced in the coming months.
