Kingston Road gas leak capped; power restored to 4,500 customers

Power was fully restored to 4,500 customers in the east end, the morning after a major gas leak in the area.

Enbridge received a call about the leak after a construction crew hit a gas line near 1080 Kingston Rd. at Victoria Park Avenue around noon on Friday.

That forced the evacuation of Neil McNeil high school and residences and businesses within 500 metres of the source. TTC buses were dispatched to shelter people.

A homeowner across from Neil McNeil told CityNews that firemen knocked on his door and asked him to leave his home. He said the smell of gas in the air was strong.

Lindsay Mulock said, “When we came out the gas pressure underneath the street was so intense that the manhole cover was being lifted up off of its hole and rocking in the street.”

No injuries were reported and workers from Enbridge capped the line around 5 p.m.

As a precaution, Toronto Hydro shut down power to 4,500 households while it did its work. It wasn’t given the go-ahead by fire officials to restore power until around 6 p.m. Power was fully restored around 3:30 a.m. Saturday.
