Crew demolishes World’s Biggest Bookstore

What was once the World’s Biggest Bookstore is now mostly a pile of rubble and exposed steel girders.

Demolition on the Edward Street building started on Saturday and the site won’t be completely clear for weeks, according to the crew.

The 6,000-square-metre store closed in March, just weeks after plans were announced to build a row of four restaurants in its place.

The World’s Biggest Bookstore opened in 1980 and soon became a mecca for booklovers, before the era of chains like Chapters Indigo, which owned the superstore in the years leading up to its demise.

According to Guinness World Records, the largest bookstore in the world is actually the Barnes & Noble on Fifth Avenue in New York City. It covers 47,000 square metres and has 21 kilometres of shelving.

The restaurants at 20 Edward St. are due to open in time for the Toronto International Film Festival next September.
