Police search for alleged mob boss after organized crime group dismantled

Two men are wanted after police dismantled an organized crime ring in the GTA.

On Tuesday a number of warrants were issued in connection with an investigation called Project Forza which focused on a group of people allegedly involved in extortion, fraud, firearms offences and drug trafficking.

The organized crime ring allegedly had ties to a Montreal mob family and investigators said the group was considered a threat to public safety.

Police say the investigation determined that in April 2013 Juan Fernandez and his associate Fernando Pimantel were murdered in Italy. As a result of this murder Daniele Ranieri, 30, of Bolton gained control of the organized crime group operating in the GTA.

Police say raids were made in Toronto, Bolton and Vaughan, which lead to the arrests of several members of the Ranieri organized crime group.

Six people were arrested for charges ranging from breach of parole to drug trafficking and extortion.

“This is a highly-successful example of how police agencies work together where matters of public safety go beyond the border of one city or region,” said York Regional Police Chief Eric Jolliffe. “We’re very proud of our partnership with surrounding police services and we continue to work together towards the common goal of safe communities for everyone.”

Police say warrants are outstanding for Ranieri as well as his associate Lucas Day, 41, of Toronto.

Both men are considered armed and dangerous.
