2 vigils held in GTA for slain Pakistani children

Two candlelight vigils were held Friday for the children and staff killed earlier this week by the Pakistan Taliban during an attack at a school in Peshawar.

Students from York University, the University of Toronto, Ryerson University and McMaster University gathered at Queen’s Park for a candlelight vigil that began at 5 p.m.

“This fight is not only for Pakistan. This is the fight for humanity,” said Vekqar Riees, Fighting Against Violence.

Zumer Fatima, President of Ryerson Pakistani Student Association, added: “As students this is really close to our hearts because we are students as well so we can feel the pain. Their only fault in this case was because they wanted education.

A second one was held later in the evening in Pickering organized by city officials.

“This is not acceptable,” said Pickering Mayor, David Ryan. “We are going to stand up and confront it.”

On Thursday, a vigil was held in Vaughan to grieve and show support for the more than 145 victims killed in Tuesday’s attack at a military-run school. Many of the victims were children between the ages of 12 and 16.
