SIU investigating after Toronto police shooting in Scarborough

The SIU is investigating after a 40-year-old man was shot by Toronto police behind a Walmart at a Scarborough mall.

CityNews has learned that the man, a father of four, is an employee at Walmart’s grocery division.

An employee who didn’t want to be identified said the man was working on Thursday and appeared normal during his shift.

For some reason he became despondent and was reportedly cutting himself with a knife by the loading dock of the Walmart at Agincourt Mall when police arrived around 5 p.m. Police confirm that at one point, he had a butcher knife pointed at his own throat.

“Toronto Police officers responded to a report of a man with a knife at the rear of the Walmart store located at Kennedy Rd and Sheppard Ave.,” the SIU said in a release.

“There was an interaction between the police and the man resulting in the man being shot.”

The man was shot twice in the stomach.

One witness said he heard officers commanding him to drop the knife before gun shots rang out.

Paramedics say the victim has life-threatening injuries.

“There was at least four gun shots,” said witness Tony. “He was quite disgruntled and he was wanting to be suicidal.”

Walmart declined to comment, referring the matter to police.
