Ontario MPP wants to loosen restrictions on beer & wine sales

A wine-country MPP wants to make it easier for the province’s wine, beer and liquor makers to offer customers more variety in their stores.

The Raise a Glass to Ontario Act is being considered at Queen’s Park. It made its way into the legislature by way of a private member’s bill by Todd Smith, the MPP who represents the growing wine region of Prince Edward Hastings.

The act would allow craft breweries and Ontario wineries to sell each others’ products at their own locations and to set up their own warehousing separate from the LCBO or The Beer Store.

Smith’s bill has received support from the Liberal government as it passed through second reading on its way to the finance committee for further study.

If the idea flies, it will be included in the spring budget.
